About Stewart

During Stewart’s senior year at the University of Vermont, he walked into the campus radio station one day to volunteer for a shift and that was it. So began a 41-year career in Vermont broadcast news and political journalism.

After a first year reporting local news for the top AM/FM stations in Chittenden County, Stewart moved to television. He covered city hall, politics and government for NBC5 TV– WPTZ for four decades, reporting every major statewide political story and visiting every community across Vermont. He also traveled the country covering the presidential campaigns of Gov. Howard Dean and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders. But he was always at home in Montpelier, reporting on the last six Vermont administrations and more than 20 Statehouse legislative sessions.

Stewart moderated numerous televised election debates and the long-running journalists' roundtable, ‘Vermont This Week’, on Vermont Public (PBS) each Friday night from 2007 until 2023.

He grew up in southern Vermont and was educated in public schools, at Deerfield Academy and the University of Vermont. He was honored with the national Edward R. Murrow award, the 2023 GBIC community service award and was inducted into the Vermont Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame. Widely regarded for his institutional knowledge and fairness in coverage, Stewart retired as a top-rated anchor in February, 2024.

Off-duty, Stewart enjoys Vermont’s mountains and lakes year-round. He and his partner of 20 years love to travel through Quebec, New England and beyond. He enjoys time working the garden, learning to cook and is a so-so golfer. He's proud to be part of Vermont’s LGBTQ+ community.

Winooski has been home for more than 30 years.
